What are cannabinoids ?
Cannabinoids are naturally occurring molecules within the hemp plant that interact with endocannabinoid receptors (cannabinoid receptors within our bodies) to create a variety of effects on our central nervous system and our brains.
There are over a hundred different cannabinoids (CBD, THC, CBC, CBDa, CBG...) naturally present in different quantities within different hemp strains. Each with their unique properties and benefits.
What are terpenes ?
Terpenes are naturally occurring molecules within the hemp plant, that can also be found in other plants or fruits. It is terpenes that give them their smell and taste.
You might be unknowingly familiar with terpenes because they are what of the main components of essential oils.
More than a specific taste and smell, each terpene has a specific benefit on our wellbeing and some can work in synergy with specific cannabinoids to optimize their assimilation within our body and their effect.
There are over a hundred different terpenes in the hemp plants, present in varying quantities in different strains.
Why blend cannabinoids ?
You often hear about "Full Spectrum CBD" (which means hemp extracts from a hemp strain with high occurring CBD where the extraction process has preserved other cannabinoids).
At hummies, we talk about "Plant Full Spectrum" because we want to offer you everything our different strains have to offer, not just CBD.
Our different plant genetics are rich in a variety of minor cannabinoids (other than CBD) and terpenes, and we mix full hemp extracts of our plants, following ratios defined by the latest available scientific review. Our goal is to create balanced blends, and encourage a synergy effect between naturally occurring molecules.
As in all farming product, our hemp plants might vary slightly from one year to the next (just like grapes that produce wine). To guarantee our clients a consistent experience with our products, we first get full hemp extracts from our various strains, and then blend them together to create stable ratios from one year to the next.
What extraction methods do you use ?
We use supercritical CO2 extraction and will soon switch to cold water extraction.
We harvest our plants before sunrise, because terpenes are volatile components. And then we dry them at a sub 60°C (celsius) temperature to preserve monoterpenes.
Then, we place the flowers in a 4°C vortex with water, enabling trichomes to separate themselves from other plan materials and stay within the water, where we will collect them.
